19/01/2010: Today we looked at examples of different music videos and discussed their meanings. We looked at Fatboy Slim’s video, Praise You and compared it to another such as one of Coldplay’s videos. We saw how one video has so much meaning and held a story behind it where as the other was random and more performance based. We then had to do our own comparison on two different videos and I chose Rihanna’s disturbia and Fatboy Slim’s Bushes as the contrast was so big. In the following weeks we continued to view PowerPoint’s explaining the history and conventions of music videos. We saw how they went from being basic with little props and fuss, with an example from David Bowies Life on Mars to outrageous videos which pushed boundaries such as making men the sexual object for once, seen in Red Hot Chilli Peppers music video for Give it Away.
26/01/2010 – 2/02/2010: In these two lessons I used all the information I got from the presentations and made my own all about music videos and what they do, how they have changed and so on. I found this a bit difficult at first but I had many notes to go by which need make things a bit easier. I enjoyed learning about the history as you got to see how videos have changed so much and how different they are to now.
16/02/2010: Today I printed off the lyrics to the song I am using and wrote next to each line what I wanted to happen in my video to make it clearer to myself and also so I could start planning properly.
23/02/2010: Today I emailed TrueStudios which is a place that allows you to hire out their studios for photography and so on and started arranging dates. I also began taking notes on costumes and props and different editing techniques I might want to use in my video.
2/03/2010: Today I emailed TrueStudios again to get a price list so I can arrange the cost of things and get a date booked. I also began researching examples of animatics for task 2.
9/03/2010: Today I received an email from Jenny at TrueStudios and should get an hourly rate list emailed back to me soon. I then printed off my lyrics again and wrote down the time for when every verse kicked in and began writing down my ideas for those certain lyrics. I also sent messages to the people in my video to insure they were doing it and now waiting for a confirmation.
16/03/2010: Today I drew my storyboard which was 8 slides long and this gave me a clearer view on what my video will look like. I also had a look at some alternative locations and have had a problem with finding a time and place to suit my male actor as he has college as well.
23/03/2010: Today I phoned a few gyms that had dance studios such as Kings Centre La Fitness in East Grinstead. I am waiting to hear from them. I also emailed K2 Centre in Crawley and am waiting to hear from them also. I also began thinking of costumes I want my actors to wear.
19/04/2010: Today I completed my paperwork. This included my call sheet, shooting schedule and risk assessment. I also filled in a filming schedule so I could take out the equipment and handed it in to Nicola.
24/04/2010: Today I filmed my Music Video in the dance studio. At times I found it very tough as I was given a broken tripod so it was difficult capturing shots without the camera moving. The location was really useful and I managed to get some really nice silhouette shots by using the windows. The mirrored walls on set also helped me create some really interesting shots. Filming started at half 12 and finished around half past four and at times it was quite stressful however I did enjoy it. I also took some extra footage after we had filmed each scene to ensure I had enough to work with.
26/04/2010: Today I logged by footage and began to edit the beginning bit. I didn’t get much done but I did begin to get an idea of how I wanted it to look and I experimented with the different types of editing tools.
4/05/2010: I continued editing today and got the first verse edited. After having a play with the editing tools I got a definite idea/theme for my music video and this was bright, clashing and fun colours with lots of different movement and shapes going on.
10/04/2010: Today I finished editing my music video and was very pleased with the out come. I was worried that the music wouldn’t fit in time to the footage but it did perfectly. I am going to go back and make a few adjustments to some of my video but after that it will be completely finished.
