Production Diary

19/01/2010: Today we looked at examples of different music videos and discussed their meanings. We looked at Fatboy Slim’s video, Praise You and compared it to another such as one of Coldplay’s videos. We saw how one video has so much meaning and held a story behind it where as the other was random and more performance based. We then had to do our own comparison on two different videos and I chose Rihanna’s disturbia and Fatboy Slim’s Bushes as the contrast was so big. In the following weeks we continued to view PowerPoint’s explaining the history and conventions of music videos. We saw how they went from being basic with little props and fuss, with an example from David Bowies Life on Mars to outrageous videos which pushed boundaries such as making men the sexual object for once, seen in Red Hot Chilli Peppers music video for Give it Away.
26/01/2010 – 2/02/2010: In these two lessons I used all the information I got from the presentations and made my own all about music videos and what they do, how they have changed and so on. I found this a bit difficult at first but I had many notes to go by which need make things a bit easier. I enjoyed learning about the history as you got to see how videos have changed so much and how different they are to now.

16/02/2010: Today I printed off the lyrics to the song I am using and wrote next to each line what I wanted to happen in my video to make it clearer to myself and also so I could start planning properly.

23/02/2010: Today I emailed TrueStudios which is a place that allows you to hire out their studios for photography and so on and started arranging dates. I also began taking notes on costumes and props and different editing techniques I might want to use in my video.
2/03/2010: Today I emailed TrueStudios again to get a price list so I can arrange the cost of things and get a date booked. I also began researching examples of animatics for task 2.

9/03/2010: Today I received an email from Jenny at TrueStudios and should get an hourly rate list emailed back to me soon. I then printed off my lyrics again and wrote down the time for when every verse kicked in and began writing down my ideas for those certain lyrics. I also sent messages to the people in my video to insure they were doing it and now waiting for a confirmation.

16/03/2010: Today I drew my storyboard which was 8 slides long and this gave me a clearer view on what my video will look like. I also had a look at some alternative locations and have had a problem with finding a time and place to suit my male actor as he has college as well.

23/03/2010: Today I phoned a few gyms that had dance studios such as Kings Centre La Fitness in East Grinstead. I am waiting to hear from them. I also emailed K2 Centre in Crawley and am waiting to hear from them also. I also began thinking of costumes I want my actors to wear.

19/04/2010: Today I completed my paperwork. This included my call sheet, shooting schedule and risk assessment. I also filled in a filming schedule so I could take out the equipment and handed it in to Nicola.

24/04/2010: Today I filmed my Music Video in the dance studio. At times I found it very tough as I was given a broken tripod so it was difficult capturing shots without the camera moving. The location was really useful and I managed to get some really nice silhouette shots by using the windows. The mirrored walls on set also helped me create some really interesting shots. Filming started at half 12 and finished around half past four and at times it was quite stressful however I did enjoy it. I also took some extra footage after we had filmed each scene to ensure I had enough to work with.

26/04/2010: Today I logged by footage and began to edit the beginning bit. I didn’t get much done but I did begin to get an idea of how I wanted it to look and I experimented with the different types of editing tools.

4/05/2010: I continued editing today and got the first verse edited. After having a play with the editing tools I got a definite idea/theme for my music video and this was bright, clashing and fun colours with lots of different movement and shapes going on.

10/04/2010: Today I finished editing my music video and was very pleased with the out come. I was worried that the music wouldn’t fit in time to the footage but it did perfectly. I am going to go back and make a few adjustments to some of my video but after that it will be completely finished.

Sofia Music Video :)

TASK ONE:
Interesting Music Videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3EtytFfwvg Bushes by Fatboy Slim.

Analysing a Music Video.

I am analysing the music video ‘Bushes’ by Fatboy Slim, it is directed by Markus Nikolai. The music in the video and most of Fatboy Slim’s music is electronic dance genre and you can see this from many of his music videos as many feature out of this world scenarios and costumes.

The lyrics fit the video perfectly as it is titled Bushes and a majority of the lyrics are him singing bushes repeatedly and the video is of lots of different girls getting their bikini wax but the video leaves you to ‘ do the math’ as it were as you only see the faces of these women. It is a really clever way of making a video relate to the lyrics and actually quite simple to.

The beat picks up in the song at the same time as all the girls are screaming and everything speeds up more. At the very beginning there is just the sound of the trumpet playing and the shot in the video is of the chair where all the girls have to sit. The way it is done is almost in a dramatic way to emphasise the chair making us aware that something is going to happen involving it.

The record company are looking to sell this track through the comedy side of things. It isn’t an amazingly memorable song but the video is very memorable and funny which will make it stand out and make people want to watch it. The image this portrays of the artist is that they are care free and have a sense of humour and this goes for all his videos as most are very random but entertain us and the artists has gone for a natural feel with his videos on two occasions, that being with ‘Bushes’ and ‘Praise you’. Another example of a humours video of his would be ‘Weapon of Choice’ which stars Christopher Walken. The motifs are all relatively the same with Fatboy Slim’s videos as they are all a bit odd but they keep us amused and keep us watching as an audience, rarely does the video actually have anything to do with the song and its lyrics apart from in this case ‘Bushes’.

I do think that the girls used in this video are kind of used in a sexual way because the whole idea of the song and video is quite intimate however I don’t think they are used in the sense of dancing around in nothing but a bikini because in the video they are joking and laughing about it but because of the ‘situation’ it can be see as maybe more intimate rather than sexual. We see the video through the eyes of a cctv camera almost and it is done in a way as if you are spying on them as an audience and they cant see the camera there.

I don’t think there are any intertextual references it is just a random idea for a music video. I think the video is concept based mostly and I suppose it could also be classed as performance because there are characters in the video ‘performing’ as such but they don’t know it so I would say it is mainly concept based.

Analysing a Second Video.
The second music video I will be analiysing and comparing to Fatboy Slim's Bushes is, Rhianna, Disturbia. The genre that it referrs to would be RnB and has a completely different sound to Bushes. The lyrics in the song do relate to the video because the video itself is very dark and disturbing and has lots of different creatures and situations that are scary for example in one part Rhianna is seen chained in a small hole trying to break free. Comparing it to Bushes there is a real contrast. Bushes is light and cheerful and very humourous where as Disturbia is very sadistic and evil and represents dark things however boths lyrics do relate to the video. In Disturbia most of it is very mis matchy and doesnt really fit with the beat of the song however there is one part in the chorus when the word Disturbia is sung followed by Rhianna sort of humming a tune (bumbum be dum ) sort of sound and all the characters in the video change to dancing to that tune moving stiff like zombies. This is similar to Bushes as it is also very random but Bushes uses its audio to create the humour. The artist is being sold in a way that shows a new image. She used to sing strong RnB songs where as this song was different and had a harder feel and image. The record company played on this and used it to sell more records as all her fans were interested in her new take on her music. The video is still very glamorous but doesnt relate to any she has done before where as Fatboy Slims videos are all very different but in a way the same as they are all random abd funny. When everyone is holding Rhianna up in the air and she is in little clothes it does show her in a sexualised way and also when she is seductivly dancing on a manicin but it shows it in a wierd way.

Conventions of the Music Video.

There is a relationship or bond between the lyrics/music and the visuals. This means that in a music video, sometimes the actual footage (visuals) relates to the lyrics in the song. For example in Rihanna’s song Take a Bow, she is singing about an argument and break up of a relationship and in the video it shows this in a story like way. One lyric is “before the sprinklers come on” and that is what happens in the actual video.

Voyeurism: A privileged point of view.
An example of this would be in 50 cent and Justin Timberlake and Timberland’s video where you see what they see in a peeping tom style. We are almost sitting in the car with Justin and looking through the binoculars as he does in the video.

Lyrics: Help create a feeling or a certain mood to the listener.
If the lyrics are sung slow, and have a meaning that relate to sadness or negativity then this effects the audience same as it does if the song is energetic and upbeat. However sometimes a song can appear to be sad but the video is actually an upbeat video. An example of this would be Alicia Keys “Doesn’t mean anything” because the lyrics are about losing someone you love but the video is full of flowers and bright colours.

Music: In some videos the visuals are edited to fit the music itself. It tends to make use of the tempo of the track to drive the editing and sometimes this emphasise a certain sound from the track. In Pitbull’s video for “Krazy” this is done using lighting. When the beat gets more intense or faster the light gets bigger and the dancers in the video to react to this my jumping to the beat. This effects the actual track as it makes you actually want to dance to it and you cant help but get into the rhythm especially when you see others doing it like you do in this video which in turn is good for the artist.

Genre: Some music videos transcend genres but others are categorised. Certain music channels concentrate on particular music genres. An example of this would be the Kiss music channel as it only really promotes and shows R&B artists. After viewing the same type of videos on one channel for a certain period of time, you begin to see that one genre will all have very similar videos, even if they have different visuals or themes deep down they all have the same idea and characteristics. For example, timberlands new song “Morning after Dark” is about vampires but they way its shown is almost like a spy sort of film and everything is very dark and mysterious and this video’s characteristics are the same as his video with 50Cent and Justin Timberlake (mentioned before) which to is dark and sinister and secretive. Other features may be reflected in types of mise-en-scene, themes, performance and camera & editing styles.

Camerawork: The pace of the camera work is important with a music video. It can accompany movement of performers (walking dancing etc) an example of this is Shakira’s video for “Give it up to me” as the camera moves very fast and fits in time with the beat of the song and they dance sequence.

Editing: The most common form of editing is fast out montage. This is where lots of images are rendered to be impossible to view properly on a first view and this makes an audience watch it again to see what else is in the video. On the other hand some videos use slow images to create a certain mood. Using digital effects can enhance the editing of a video and the most popular form of editing is CGI special effects.

Intertextuality: Some music videos are created to spark recognition in the audience. Television and film are usually drawn upon points of reference. An example of this would be Christina Aguilera’s video for “Candyman” as it goes back to the 1940-50’s.

History of Music Videos.

Early History:
Music and moving images have always gone together and as time went on, became more detailed e.g., matching the beat of a song with an image that appears.
1930-1930’s- experimental video.
The musical was now classed as a genre.
Soundies-early US jukebox, European version (Scopitone)

1960’s Promos:
“Hard days Night “and other rock films that displayed rebellion a lot of the time.
Lots of artists made little films that were very simple and basic and usually starred the artists alone but were very experimental. An example of this would be Bob Dylan’s video where he is seen displaying que cards repeating the lyrics from his song. These videos were also inspired by artists at that time such as Andy Warhol.
Many were very drug influenced.

1970’s Promos:
· Top of the Pops started to use videos. This was because a lot of the time bands were touring the country or even around the world so these videos were used as a substitute.
· Most videos in this time were still very experimental and studio based. This was because they had small amounts of money to spend on the videos therefore could not fork out on expensive equipment and travel to locations. An example of this would be David Bowie’s video for ‘Life on Mars’ where the whole video is of him in a white room singing. No props, costumes, people or fancy locations.
· Jackson 5’s career kicked off.

80’s Beginning of MTV:
· Artists began to take need for promo for every release seriously.
· Changes in technology and gap in the cable market.
· Boom in promos in the early 80’s.
· “Radio Star” was the first song ever played on MTV.
· Madness, Madonna and Michael Jackson’s solo careers launched.

The 90’s:
· The boom of the 80’s increased in the 90’s with huge amounts of money being set aside for top music video directors.
· Growth of genre based characters
· Black music artists/genres finally became common place in the market.
· Other companies set up channels as spin-offs from other products, for example, Smash Hits, CD: UK etc.
· Videos became more controversial with twisted voyeurism. An example of this would be “Give it away” by RHCP with the men in the videos dancing around half naked and therefore seen as the sexual object rather than using women as the sexual object.

Online Music TV and Beyond:
· Growth online in non professional music videos, e.g. Myspace and Youtube.
· Interactive music videos and videos just produced for online consumption.
· I think that in the future music videos will tell more stories to the audience. I also think that many will become more crazy and random. Early signs of this would be Lady GaGa’s videos as they are always exciting but so strange. I also think that videos will become more contemporary and. One thing that won’t change is that all artists are usually starring in their own videos. Music video channels are being invaded by daytime programmes. For example, MTV now has more TV shows such as Pimp My Ride, Super Sweet Sixteen and Cribs. So in the future I don’t think there will be as many music channels on the television, I think that main source of music will become the computer with software such as Limewire and iTunes.

Target Audience.

Audience and the text:

All media texts is produced with an intended reader. The content of the text has to be suitable for that intented reader. Style of presentation must be appealing and the content as to be understood by that audience.

Expectation and Pleasure:

Audience plays an active role in Media text by demanding repeatition and difference. We can learn early that image relates to music. We reject anything that is not convincing to the type of video.

Media people need to be aware of a target audience, the ideal or preferred audience. There is a difference between target audience and actual audience. Gender-the different interest of men and women are most obvious.

Star Image.

The creation of character for stars provides identification for the audience which is very important if lyrics lack depth. An example of this would be Lady GaGa as she has created an alter ego of herself and wears wacky clothes and does strange things yet everyone lets her do it because it is just 'Lady GaGa'.

Star's effect on an audience:

Emotional Affinity: Audience feels a loose attachment to the star

Self Identification: Audience member places themselves in star's shoes

Imitiation: The auidience and star relationship acts as a model

Projection: Audience becomes obsessed with the star

Star Vechile:

The image is constructed by the video and publicity surrounding the artist for example, in the papers live performances and so on. The construction forms a product to sell to the audience.

Star Power:

Economic power: Through earnings generated

Artistic Power: Creative control over their own image and how it is seen in the media

Ideological Power: Theri influence over the audience
